Grass is Always Greener — Top-Rated Iowa Golf Courses

There are 446 golf courses in Iowa. While this abundance brings pleasure to those passionate pursuers of puttering on greens and fairways, it also invites comparisons. Whether you’re planning a golf tournament or just a round for the corporate execs, wouldn’t it be nice to know which courses offer a game that’s good, and which ones offer a golf experience that’s great? Here’s what we think and why:

Coldwater Golf Links

What to expect: The award-winning 18-hole course has a meandering feel to it with large greens and subtle slopes. Strategically placed water hazards and bunkers add challenge and beauty to the layout, while 3-, 4-, and 5-par holes offer a rewarding challenge to every player.

Why we love it: Beautifully maintained grounds and impeccable service are highlights of this public course. Reasonable green fees, cart rental, and driving range make it an appealing option for groups and tournaments.

The Preserve on Rathbun Lake at Honey Creek Resort

What to expect: The Preserve is a golf mecca for all who make it their mission to play at exceptional courses. With 18 challenging holes, the course features natural landscapes, scenic prairies, and oak savannas. Ranked #5 in Iowa for Best Public Golf Course and recognized in Golf Digest’s Best New Public Courses of 2009, Golf Magazine’s 2009 Best New Courses, and Golf Inc.’s Developments of the Year.

Why we love it:  The Preserve is Audubon-certified in recognition of its sustainable practices designed to minimize its environmental footprint while encouraging people to enjoy nature in the heart of Iowa’s Honey Creek State Park. The lovely resort offers guests the chance to relax in the lodge, a cottage, or at the RV Park. Indoor water park, kayaks, beach volleyball, jet skis, pontoons, and ski boats add to its appeal.

Grand Falls Casino + Golf Resort

What to expect: Designed by the legendary Rees Jones, this breathtaking 18-hole course has been the site of 15 major championships, five Ryder Cups, two Walker Cups and one President’s Cup. Encompassing 7100 yards, the world-class course offers panoramic views and includes a 30-foot waterfall that flows into a 12-acre lake.

Why we love it: Golfers will remember their playing experience as much as they’ll enjoy the full-service golf shop, 24-hour casino, three dining options, spa, whirlpool and steam room, indoor/outdoor pools and hot tubs, and comfortable rooms.

Willow Creek Golf Course

What to expect: Known for having some of the best greens in the area, the 18-hole course is magnificently designed and beautifully maintained. The executive 9-hole course is perfect for a fast game or for a round with family.

Why we love it: Willow Creek now offers 9 holes of foot golf, an incredibly entertaining fusion of golf and soccer that is rapidly gaining in popularity. Banquet facilities are welcoming for large groups or for smaller gatherings, a tasty burger and frosty beer are served up fresh at the 19th Hole restaurant.

Okoboji View Golf Course

What to expect: The sprawling greens and sparkling water features at this 18-hole course make it a memorable place to play. The emphasis is on nature here with tree-lined fairways and rolling hills. Built and open for play in 1962, the club managers are steeped in golf tradition and members of the PGA since 1988.

Why we love it: Practice facilities and pro shop ensure players are ready to tee up when it comes time. The course also features the Pub 19 Bar + Grill which can accommodate up to 125 people comfortably and boasts spectacular views of the course, a relaxed atmosphere, and a large outdoor deck.

Of course, this is just a smattering of the courses out there that are on par with your tournament goals. We know choosing just one might be rough, but once you start researching your options, we think you’ll find your sweet spot.
