GREEN LAKE - The Heidel House Resort & Spa could reopen next spring for the first time in two years after its owner accepted an offer from a new buyer.
"Lighthouse Hotel Development, with an investment group, Green Lake Hotel Group LLC, led by Mike White of Green Lake, made an offer for the Heidel House property to Fiore Companies, and it was accepted," Green Lake Mayor Ray Radis told the Oshkosh Northwestern on Tuesday morning.
The deal is scheduled to close in mid-September, with a possible reopening date in May, Radis said.
The resort's May 2019 closure "had a dramatic effect" on the community, Radis said, including $200,000 in room tax that supported the Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, plus the business it brought to local golf courses and other related industries.
"This is very, very exciting for us to have the Heidel House back," Radis said.
The Heidel House was built in 1890 as a private estate before it was converted into a family-run resort in 1945. Fiore bought the property in the 1980s, initially keeping its management staff, but as Fiore started dropping hotels from its portfolio, it contracted with Marcus Hotels & Resorts in 2014 to run the facility.
In March 2016, Fiore announced it was putting the Heidel House up for sale as it was trying to unload its last remaining hotel property, Fiore CEO Stacy Nemeth told The Northwestern at the time.
Another potential buyer, Spirit of Green Lake LLC, began looking into buying the property in summer 2019 but later determined the costs outweighed the potential returns on investment, Ripon attorney Steve Sorenson, the company's registered agent, told The Northwestern in November.
