Ottertail County, MN (WDAY TV) - A series of potentially heated town hall meetings are coming to Otter Tail County.
The topic of discussion a large casino proposed by The White Earth Nation.
If White Earth Nation reaches its goal, these empty fields will one day be the home of a large casino.
The site would be near the intersection of County Highway 41 and 380th Street, along the west side of Star Lake.
The proposed casino would be about 270 acres and have more than 5,000 feet of lake access.
If the project moved ahead, this will be The White Earth Nation's 3rd casino.
The casino would be operated under Shooting Start Casino, Hotel and Entertainment Company.
In September, the company announced construction could start sometime this year and the casino could open sometime in 2017.
"We don't have a formal proposal here at the county,” said Nick Leonard.
Nick Leonard is the Director of Tourism and Economic Development for Otter Tail County.
He says until an official proposal is submitted, there's no way to tell when construction could potentially start.
But for now, he says the county's main goal, is to work with White Earth Nation, Star Lake Homeowners Association and Star Lake Township to create a "Limited Comprehensive Plan."
"So what those opportunities and potential impacts could be. So we're going to be looking at everything from transportation to housing, recreation, environmental certainly,” said Leonard.
These open meetings will take place in several places over the next few months although exact times and locations have not been set.
Multiple messages were left with Shooting Star Casino Tuesday.
The company did not return any calls.
