The Marcus family and The Pfister Hotel won the first-ever “Heritage Award” from the Historic Hotels of America, according to a news release.
The Pfister hosted the group’s annual convention in downtown Milwaukee last week. The award honors “an individual, a hotel, an ownership entity, or management company which has demonstrated an inspirational leadership role in preserving, strengthening, and honoring its community’s unique cultural and heritage treasures.”
The Pfister was built in 1893 and bought by the Marcus family in 1962. It’s now part of Marcus Hotels & Resorts, a division of The Marcus Corp.
The Marcus family was nominated for “Legendary Family Historic Hoteliers of the Year,” but that award went to the Morrissey family and The Saint Paul Hotel in St. Paul, Minn.
During the convention, The Pfister held an “illumination ceremony” to introduce new outdoor lights on the building. A white light now illuminates the oldest part of the hotel at night, while lights on the “tower” portion of the hotel change with the seasons.
