The Fox Cities Exhibition Center Inc. wants to see the area's hotel room tax raised from 9 percent to 10 percent - the state maximum - to help pay for a new $27 million exhibition center in downtown Appleton and possibly a new indoor sports complex.
Hospitality industry observers in the region don't see much opposition from hotel operators, who believe that the new convention and sports complexes would boost visitor totals in the area. The rate increase will require the approval of nine municipalities: Appleton, Grand Chute, Little Chute, Kaukauna, Kimberly, Neenah, Sherwood and the towns of Menasha and Neenah.
