Businesses and High Schools Partner to Educate Future Workforce

November 9, 2009 –The Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce and Dunwoody College of Technology are pleased to announce Career Jam 2009.  Career Jam is a career exploration event for high school students in the Metro area taking place on Thursday, December 3, 2009 at Dunwoody College of Technology from 9:00am-1:00pm.  This event has been overwhelmingly positive in the past with numerous benefits for both the students and speakers.
 
Career Jam 2009 will be the eleventh such event sponsored by the Chamber.  This year’s event has over 1100 students already registered and over 35 speakers eager to volunteer their time to speak with students about career development.  Career Jam 2009 will be attended by sophomores and juniors from the following Metro area high schools: Andover High School, Arlington High School, Blaine High School, Centennial High School, Central Senior High School, Champlin Park High School, Columbia Heights High School, Crossroads Alternative, Crossroads North, and Crossroads West High Schools, Fairview High School, Fridley Area Learning Center, Guadalupe Alternative Program, Harding High School, Henry High School, Irondale High School, Johnson High School, Kennedy & Jefferson High Schools, Learning Alternative Community School, Meadow Creek Christian School, Mounds View High School, North Community High School, Paladin Academy, Roosevelt High School, Thomas Edison High School, Waconia High School, Wayzata High School, West 7th PAS, and Westonka High School.

While attending Career Jam, students will experience five 20 minute sessions focusing on the career fields of their choice.  Companies providing speakers for the event include: Dunwoody College of Technology, Le Cordon Blue, Minneapolis Police Department, Ecolab, and Keller Williams Realty to name a few. Volunteers will discuss with students what a typical day may resemble in their profession and offer advice on what steps students may need to take in order to move ahead in similar careers.  This event is a great opportunity for business professionals to reach out to our local schools.  One of the student’s sessions, students will have the opportunity to attend the Resource Fair to speak with Colleges, Universities, and Military Personnel about post-graduate options.
