In many ways, the Hewing Hotel belongs in the North Loop, with its chef-driven restaurant, exposed brick rooms and lumber from the 1800s.
But the boutique hotel also adds some things lacking or missing from the neighborhood, namely 124 hotel rooms and a rooftop bar and lounge. Developers Aparium Hotel Group of Chicago and Fe Equus of Milwaukee are pushing to get their first Twin Cities project open in November. They're working with Greiner Construction of Minneapolis and architect Elness Swenson Graham of Minneapolis on the $38.4 million project.
On Tuesday, Aparium, which will also manage the hotel, hosted a hard-hat tour of the hotel, which is in the midst of construction.
The restaurant will be called Tullibee. Aparium hired Grae Nonas, a 2015 Food & Wine Best New Chef, to create a Nordic restaurant. Tullibee will seat 89 and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. It features an open kitchen.
The hotel, at 300 Washington Ave. N., is in the 119-year-old Jackson Building that was originally a farm equipment showroom.
In addition to a bar and outdoor seating, the rooftop will also have a pool. The rooftop will be open to the public after 5 p.m.
The basement has a fitness center and yoga studio.
Aparium representatives said they expect executives and business travelers as guests. They also expect friends and family of North Loop dwellers, plus people in the Twin Cities on “stay-cations.”
This is Aparium Hotel Group’s first Twin Cities hotel, though the company also manages other historic, boutique hotels in the Midwest, like The Iron Horse in Milwaukee and Charmant Hotel in La Crosse, Wis.
