The Embassy Suites in downtown St. Paul is expected to close on or about Jan. 8, 2019.
The hotel, at 175 10th St. E., will lay off 116 workers, according to a letter submitted to Minnesota's Department of Employment and Economic Development. A spokesperson for the hotel's ownership said there was a change in ownership and it will undergo renovations and reopen at a later date.
"After extensive renovations, the hotel will reopen as the first Drury Plaza Hotel in the state of Minnesota," a spokesperson wrote in an email. "Drury Hotels looks forward to continuing the tradition of excellent customer service with a revitalized hotel for St. Paul visitors."
Another Drury Plaza is planned in Bloomington near the intersection of France Avenue and Interstate 494.
St. Paul's Embassy Suites is about a mile away from Xcel Energy Center.
The closure and renovation would come amid some hotel-development activity in St. Paul. Over the summer, Wisconsin hotel developer The Raymond Group locked in land a few blocks from Regions Hospital where it plans to open a 180-room hotel. In city documents, the developers said the hotel would be a SpringHill Suites.
About two years ago, a new, 160-room Hampton Inn and Suites hotel opened on West Seventh Street.
