Downtown Milwaukee hotel development site sells for $5.15 million — with nod to new streetcar

A downtown Milwaukee development site for two future hotels was sold for more than $5 million — with the buyer's name making an homage to the city's future downtown streetcar.

Bloomington, Minn.-based JR Hospitality and Coralville, Iowa-based Hawkeye Hotels on Thursday disclosed plans to demolish the obsolete buildings and develop two six-story hotels: one hotel, totaling 213 rooms, will feature the Home2 Suites and Tru brands, along with a 115-room Holiday Inn Express.

The group that bought the development site, west of North Jefferson Street between East Michigan and East Clybourn streets, is Hop City Lodging LLC.

That's a reference to The Hop, Milwaukee's new streetcar service, which will include a lakefront loop running past the hotels on both Michigan and Clybourn streets.
