Starwood Strikes Historic Cuba Deals
While the future owner of the Starwood name is still in the air that hasn’t stopped the company from making business moves (and more headlines), by becoming the first U.S. hotel chain to operate in Cuba in over 50 years with the announcement it would renovate and run three Havana hotels.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts signed deals in Cuba on Saturday night, March 19, that will give it management rights to the 83-room Hotel Inglaterra, which will become part of the Starwood Luxury Collection, and the 186-room Hotel Quinta Avenida, which will become the Four Points by Sheraton Havana. It also signed a letter of intent to manage the 27-room Hotel Santa Isabel, which will also join Starwood’s Luxury Collection.
Hotel Quinta Avenida, soon to become a Four Points by Sheraton, appears to be the property with the most meetings potential, as it currently includes three different meeting rooms for up to 100 guests. The Hotel Santa Isabel agreement still needs to be approved by the U.S. Treasury Department.
