A 300-room luxury hotel planned for Minneapolis- St. Paul International Airport carries architectural echoes of the nearby main terminal, with futuristic folds and a bit of an aerodynamic look.
The Metropolitan Airports Commission on Monday gave unanimous approval to Minneapolis-based Graves Hospitality to proceed with developing the first hotel on airport property and adjoining MSP's Terminal 1.
The hotel will be connected to the main terminal via skyway, with its own security checkpoint, Graves Hospitality said Tuesday.
"The hotel's positioning offers the best of both worlds," CEO Benjamin Graves said in a statement. Citing its spa, dining and event spaces, Graves said the hotel will "be a very valuable asset for both travelers and the local community.
The hotel will be built inside the looping roadway that leads to and from the main terminal. Graves said it will enter into a ground lease next to the existing U.S. Postal Service facility.
Graves won exclusive rights to "own, develop and manage" the hotel, it said. The hotel brand will be "formally announced in the coming months," Graves said. Graves said the hotel will be open by the 2018 Super Bowl, scheduled to be played in Minneapolis.
The main terminal at MSP opened in 1962, with a signature folded roof that today is largely hidden by the airport's many additions and the sprawling nearby parking ramps.
