Plans are moving ahead for a 128-room Marriott Extended Stay hotel in Wauwatosa after the development group bought almost 3 acres in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Innovation Campus.
The hotel at 1300 Discovery Parkway is among the private developments at the campus, which includes a business park, apartments by Mandel Group Inc. that are under construction, and hopes for a future UWM research and education building. The UWM Real Estate Foundation is the master developer of the nearly 90-acre campus.
The hotel, first announced two years ago, had to jump multiple hurdles to reach this point. Most recently, the developer changed the orientation of the building due to tough soil conditions. In 2013, the developers contested a proposal by Milwaukee County Board members to place minimum wage requirements on the hotel’s employees.
Alpine Realty Capital is leading the hotel project, which is expected to start this month. The project site sold last week for $925,000, according to state records.
