Style Forecast For 2012 and Beyond

Meeting and event planning can require such long lead times that being psychic would prove helpful just so you could know what styles and trends are going to be hot (or not) in the months ahead. While the Creative Director at Apres Event Decor & Tent Rental for the past eight years — Shereé Bochenek — is not clairvoyant, she does have a keen eye, a great fashion sense and the industry expertise to know what’s coming up down the lin

Q. What is shaping up as the hottest trend in party and event styling for the end of this year?

A. I really see a continuation of the Farm Chic look. In other words, using rustic items like wooden farm tables and adding hanging chandeliers over them. It could be something like combining burlap with sequins, or using mason jars on a table and completing them with vintage goblets. This trend has come on very strong and I really believe that it’s going to continue, so much so, that we’ve just purchased a large quantity of farm tables to meet our client demand.

Q. What color is the “new black”?

A. Gray continues to be huge, most notably a pewter tone. We’re seeing it not only in table linens, but also in dark metals used in accessories and centerpieces.

Q. Metallics were hot, hot, hot for awhile. Are they still, or are they passé?

A. Metallics are still hot, but now they’re being combined in unexpected ways, such as metallics mixed with burlap. Use of metallics is a little more subtle now, not as pronounced, with touches of it running throughout decorative items and linens. For example, cotton linens with a metallic thread running throughout the weave, so the look is much more sophisticated than just raw burlap.

Q. What do see as a hot trend in furniture?

A. Vintage furniture featuring the baroque look that is more ornate; tufted furniture in fabrics like velveteen. Furniture colors have moved past black and white and are now aubergine, teal and pink for lounge furniture.

Q. What styles and colors will stand out for tabletops?

A. Gold is a big trend and black continues to be very important for chargers, stemware, dishware, and even flatware. We have a black goblet collection that is renting continually. And our gold chargers are very popular. Also, we have recently discovered some beautiful modern vases and containers in a soft brushed gold.

Q. What about fabrics and linens?

A. Prints. We’re bringing in lots of large graphic prints, along with smaller country prints. It all trickles down from fashion. Because people are more apt to wear prints in their personal wardrobe right now, they also want to see it on the table. Fabrics with dimension and texture are important now. The emphasis is more of an Americana look.

Q. Anything else to watch for?

A. Gone are the days of traditional white and ivory swag draping. Clients now want vertical hanging décor. They’re choosing flat panel draping and then reflecting lights onto them to create patterns.
