As Creative Director at Apres Event Decor & Tent Rental for the past six years, Sheree Bochenek has kept her finger on the pulse of style and trends in party and event décor. Sheree recently revealed her take on the hottest new trends to watch for in 2011.
Q. What is shaping up as the hottest trend in party and event styling for 2011?
A. High-gloss pewter metal in vases, candleholders, candelabras, and other accessories.
Q. What color is the “new black”?
A. Pewter gray. But don’t count out black; instead, always mix it with another color. Some of the most elegant looks are also the simplest. For example, black combined with white or with ivory.
Q. Are metallics’s still “in” or are they “so 2010”?
A. Metallic’s are still current, although they’re morphing into a more organic, and sometimes,
industrial feel. Consider pewter with a distressed patina, or black metal. In fabrics, metallics are
now more sophisticated, with textured metallics featured in golds and creams.
Q. What do see as a hot trend in furniture?
A. 2011 will usher in more ornate furniture…baroque style, gilded with gold and silver. The trend is reminiscent of the 1930’s interior design of Dorothy Draper. Plan on elegant, heavily upholstered furniture, adorned with details like tufting, scrollwork and nail heads.
Q. What styles and colors will stand out for tabletops?
A. Black will be very prominent. Utilize black for dishware, stemware and even flatware. And although pewter will be a strong accent, gold will also be very popular as well.
Q. What about fabrics and linens?
A. Go for prints…strong graphic prints will become much more prominent in event linen. In keeping with the very elegant trend, vintage will be fashionable as well. Using scrollwork in tabletop linen mixed with metallics is a very sophisticated look. Other options include tulle, pearls and beadwork fashioned into distressed floral motifs. Pair those with modern dinnerware for a dainty floral/modern flair. Finally, look for mosaics – in both accessories as well as fabric patterns – to make a bold statement in 2011.
Q. Anything else to watch for?
A. Color trends are shaping up to include peach, blush and any shade of purple. Also, turquoise is still a strong contender. Additionally, if you’re looking for an alternative and prefer a less decorative, elaborate décor, consider felting and natural wood accents.
