On Tap — Why Your Event Needs a Mobile App

Most of us probably can’t imagine a day without our mobile phones. Forget it at home, leave it at the coffee shop, or drop it in the toilet, and you’ve probably spent some time hyperventilating into a paper bag. Let’s face it - mobile phones are ubiquitous and they’re not going anywhere, so it’s only fitting that you fit mobile apps into your event. Stefanie Moon, Senior Meeting & Event Manager at Type A Events, knows just how beneficial mobile apps can be and precisely how to make the most of them.

Q. Tell me about your company and what you do there.

A. I’m the Senior Meeting + Event Manager at Type A Events, a full-service, strategic event company specializing in both domestic and international event and hospitality management services. I’ve been with the company for four years.

Q. Have you seen an increase in mobile app technology use at events in the last 12-24 months?

A. Yes, definitely. We’ve noticed that clients who, in the past, were hesitant about implementing mobile app technology into their events, are more enthusiastic about it now. Also, we see the use and popularity of mobile apps increasing at events we attend, while the presence of printed materials is decreasing. Mobile apps help with implementation in that when there are no written materials, it’s necessary for attendees to log in to a mobile app to view the event calendar, determine which sessions they want to attend, and more. We noticed that even those who don’t typically use mobile technology will utilize the tools when they’re at an event. The upside is a decrease in spending on printed materials, such as thick conference guides.

Q. Are there any specific apps that you’ve found particularly helpful?

A. Yes. We’ll review many mobile apps and make determinations based on client needs, but a few we often utilize include DoubleDutch and CrowdCompass. They are easy to implement and both integrate well with major registration sites. They offer good functionality with session scheduling and personalized agenda options as well.

Q. What are the benefits of using mobile app technology?

A. It’s a great platform for networking with ample tools for making that more of a focus at live events. Attendees can upload profiles and filter through other attendee profiles who are also using the same product. This makes it easier to network with other attendees within the apps themselves.

Q. Any other tips or advice?

A. There are a lot of mobile apps out there at different price points. It’s important to research them beforehand with your event goals in mind. Utilizing established “cookie cutter” apps has its advantages. They have proven functionality and are easier to use than building an app from the ground up.
